Care for more than 50 years
Kaiser Permanente began at the height of the Great
Depression with a single inventive young surgeon and a 12-bed hospital
in the middle of the Mojave desert. Kaiser Permanente evolved from industrial
health care programs for construction, shipyard, and steel-mill workers
for the Kaiser industrial companies during the late 1930s and 1940s.
It was opened to public enrollment in October 1945.
Kaiser Foundation Health Plans:Nonprofit,
public-benefit corporations that contract with individuals and groups
to arrange comprehensive medical and hospital services. Kaiser Foundation
Health Plans contract with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and medical groups
to provide services.
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals: A nonprofit, public-benefit
corporation that owns and operates community hospitals in California,
Oregon, and Hawaii; owns outpatient facilities in several states; provides
or arranges hospital services; and sponsors charitable, educational,
and research activities.
Permanente Medical Groups: Partnerships or professional
corporations of physicians. Each region has its own Permanente Medical
Group. The Permanente Medical Groups assume full responsibility for
providing and arranging necessary medical care in each region.
Nation's largest HMO: Kaiser Permanente is America's
leading integrated health care organization. Founded in 1945, it is
a nonprofit health plan, with headquarters in Oakland, California. Kaiser
Permanente serves the health care needs of members in nine states and
Washington, D.C.
Today, it encompasses Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Kaiser Foundation
Hospitals, and the Permanente Medical Groups, and it has an affiliation
with Group Health Cooperative, based in Seattle, Washington.
