Health Insurance For College Students
Health Insurance For College Students
Health insurance is absolutely essential for students, but the irony is quite a sizable number of students, rely on their university's student health care clinic and not avail any insurance plan. With all the things you have to pay for in college, buying health insurance is unfortunately last on the list of a student's priority. But this last priority might as well be the first thing to put you at serious financial risk. Assuming you are currently without health insurance, just any one serious injury could cost you an astronomical sum.
Health Insurance is often sought by college students who are no longer covered as a dependent under their parents insurance, or their college is outside the HMO or PPO region of their current insurance. If your son or daughter is presently covered under your health insurance plan as a dependent, check with the insurance company if he/she can continue on the plan as a full-time college student. Different insurance companies have different regulations. While some companies allow dependent children, if they are full-time students, to remain on the parents' health insurance plans, other insurers impose certain age restrictions.
It is a fact that many colleges offer their own student health plans which are reasonably priced and the insured students can have access to doctors and hospitals in the vicinity of the college. If your child is attending college far away from his/her home, this is a worthwhile option. In several cases, college insurance plans are preferable as they provide health services right on campus, making it easier for students to see doctors when they need to.
Student health insurance coverage, however, is invariably limited when compared with employer-provided group health plans. While the college health plan's coverage is decidedly less extensive, this coverage may be adequate for many students. Almost all student health plans cover both illnesses and accidents. However, many colleges do not have health insurance for their students, so you will want to see what other options may be available.
There are benefits and drawbacks to college health care plans, and every college offers a different deal. Traditionally, college plans have been low-cost, but that is gradually changing and some college plans are quite expensive. In addition, some plans only cover medical care within the college's geographical area, and may cease coverage during summer break.
Some colleges offer health insurance for the students by the semester, which is an affordable option particularly for students with financial problems. It is critically important to ascertain if the college insurance plan includes emergency room services and if so, the location of the nearest emergency facilities.
Make it a point to check with the college what the background of doctors are on staff, how many doctors and nurses are on duty on at any given time, etc. Please also verify if either the college health plan covers the student when he or she is not in classes particularly during the summer recess and between semesters.
But the true insurance ordeal for a college student begins immediately after they graduate. If he/she lands on a job with insurance benefits immediately after graduation, the person is lucky. It is not unusual for students to go months or even a year without coverage before landing on the first job and that is also no guarantee that employer health insurance will be included.
