Medicare
Medicare is the federal (national) health insurance program
for Americans of age 65 and above providing services for individuals
with disabilities. If you are eligible for Social Security or Railroad
Retirement benefits, you and your spouse automatically qualify to fit
and gain the benefits of Medicare. Medicare will pay for many of your
health care expenses, but not necessarily for all of them. In particular,
Medicare does not cover most nursing home care; long-term care services
in the home, or prescription drugs. There are also special rules on
when Medicare pays your bills that apply if you have employer group
health insurance coverage through your own job or the employment of
a spouse.
Medicare usually operates on a fee-for-service basis. The United States
federal government program of Hospital Insurance (Part A) and Supplementary
Medical Insurance (Part B) protection are provided under the Social
Security Act. This is a nationwide health insurance program enacted
on July 30, 1965, as Title XVIII, Health Insurance for the Aged of the
Social Security Act, and became effective on July 1, 1966.
A Federal insurance program provides a wide range of benefits to providers
and suppliers participating in the program. Providers, in Medicare,
are patient care institutions such as hospitals, hospices, nursing homes,
and home health agencies. Medicare is Australia's publicly funded, universal
health scheme, providing affordable treatment by doctors and in public
hospitals for all citizens and permanent residents except for those
on Norfolk Island. Medicare also provides coverage for visitors from
countries, which have reciprocal arrangements with Australia.
Centers for Medicare:
The Centers for Medicare manages the Medicare program and works in partnership
with the States to administer Medical aid, the State Children's Health
Insurance Program and the health insurance portability standards. It
also has other responsibilities like the administrative simplification
standards from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
of 1996 (HIPAA) and the clinical laboratory quality standards.
Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA) provides more choices in health
care coverage and health care benefits.
