A new scheme called "cover Tennessee" is proposed by Governor Phil Bredesen. The scheme could help the state´s uninsured to get the coverage need. According to the Governor´s office, there are over 600,000 people in Tennessee without insurance.
In the cover Tennessee plan workers, employers and the state all give $50 a month toward the $150 coverage fee. Patients will pay $25 co-pay for doctor´s visits and $10 co-pay for prescription drugs. The plan doesn´t need deductibles, and it´s transferable from job to job.
Some small business owners who can´t give group benefits may also have problem coming up with the money for Cover Tennessee. As $50 may look like a small price, it does add up. One local business owner says it´s either increase prices on goods and services, or leave the cost of insurance up to the workers. The proposal cover Tennessee also provides health insurance for children in homes with incomes under $50,000 for a family of four. Families that make more are allowed to buy into the plan.
