Tom Ammiano, the Supervisor of San Francisco County proposed health plans. The plans insists that the employees those who are working more than 80 hours a month or a businesses with 20 or more employees must provide health care benefits for their employees. But for a small concern you can go with a Blue Cross of California plan that covers only its employees since the coverage for family members was too costly.
David Sahagun, president of the San Francisco Small Business Commission and owner of two Chevron stations in the Castro and Pacific Heights, has related problems of covering his employees´ families. He said that insuring single people is not a big problem but those that are married with families hit big time.
Sahagun is considering health care for an employee with a wife and child that would cost his business between $643 and $1,073 a month. Another employee with a husband and two children costs between $819 and $1,094 a month, but a single employee only costs between $174 and $236 a month.
Scott Hauge the insurance specialist from CAL Insurance & Associates Inc said AB 1672 guarantees that businesses with more than two or more employees have access to "affordable health coverage". A health insurance company cannot refuse coverage to small businesses.
If you´re runnning a small business, you can go directly to a health plan," said Tom Epstein of Blue Shield of California. "It depends on the risk profile of the group and how much coverage you want, but there are lots of choices out there".
