Health insurance cards-Organ donation choice

Health insurance cards in the program for employees of small and midsize companies will let holders to point out if they wish to donate their organs in case of brain death, health ministry.

The officials of the labor, ministry of health and welfare says that this move will persuade people to think about organ donations. The health insurance program covers about 36 million people, including their families. Within the next financial year the newly issued health insurance cards will have a space for the holder to specify whether he or she wishes to donate organs in the case of brain death or if the heart stops beating.

The cardholders have to circle the organs to donate and are requested sign their name. The insurance program is run by the ministry social insurance agency, which started issuing wallet-sized insurance cards to members in 2003.
