It is important to understand the differences between dental and medical care for better understanding the options available to employers in providing a dental benefit plan to their employees. These differences drive the design of dental benefit plans, and generate a distinction between approaches to dental as well as medical benefit coverage. Dental disease is not same as general medical disease. Rather it is an insurable risk. The patient has complete control over when, or even if, treatment will be given though they are suffering from trauma and pain.
