PORTLAND - Oregon will be holding a one-of-a-kind state lottery where health insurance will be given away as a prize. By this week, the state will begin to draw names as a part of their lottery which is been designed for the students, unemployed and the employed without workplace benefits — people not poor enough for Medicaid but too cash strapped to buy their own insurance.
Nearly 80,000 people have signed up for a chance to win these insurances, but only a few thousand will be chosen. The health insurance lottery winners will be chosen in a series of drawings which might take a few months. The Oregon lottery system was designed to give everybody an equal chance to be selected, so those who needed extra time or assistance to complete their forms would have an equal chance to win.
