In California nearly 6.4 million state residents did not have health insurance coverage for the year 2007. Nearly 20 percent of all Californians under age 65 were uninsured in 2007. Even health insurance coverage for children has gone down, because parents are losing their jobs that provide health insurance. If parents lose their insurance, so do their children also. According to a survey, nearly 683,000 uninsured children polled were eligible for Medi-cal or Healthy families, but were not enrolled in those state health insurance programs. California has the second highest number of uninsured children in U.S. According to a survey, nearly 23 percent of children were eligible for private-public healthy kids program in the county but were not enrolled. According to a survey of the 4.1 million uninsured adults, 6.6 percent were eligible for Medi-Cal and the remaining adults were not eligible for coverage.
